| Are you tired of the compartmentalized approach to medicine you grew up with? If you believe that your mind, body, and spirit are connected and should be treated as a whole, consider becoming a holistic health practitioner.
According to the American Holistic Health Association, holistic health encourages balance and integration of the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual selves; respectful relationships with others and the environment; wellness-oriented lifestyle choices; and active participation in health decisions and healing processes.
This approach to wellness mandates that the holistic health practitioner use safe methods of diagnosis and treatment while emphasizing the care of the whole person. Most forms of natural medicine adhere to this basic definition.
Holistic health practitioners may use a variety of alternative health practices, such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, ayurveda, herbology, chiropractics, homeopathy, massage therapy, medicinal herbs, naturopathy, nutritional counseling, tai chi, and yoga.
Holistic health training may range from a few months to a few years. Some wellness programs provide enough training to become a licensed massage therapist. Master's degree programs in holistic health counseling often lead the way for holistic health practitioners to become licensed counselors.
