| by CB Staff |
Tui na is a form of Chinese massage that focuses on manipulating the body and areas between joints through kneading, rolling, and rubbing the skin. The goal of this Acupressure technique is to promote the natural balance of the body as well as healthy chi flow. The tui na massage technique may also be combined with other forms of medicine that are considered to be forms of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). What You'll Learn Tui na courses will teach you how to properly massage and manipulate a client's body in order to promote their overall well-being in accordance with the "eight principles" of TCM. Because tui na is considered a central aspect of TCM, you may also be expected to complete complimentary courses in TCM to augment your skills and learning. Degree Types No formal degrees system officially exists for aspiring tui na practitioners. Instead, a student may opt for a certificate or enroll in tui na courses simply to augment their massage and/or TCM knowledge. However, a few schools may offer specialized tui na degrees to students with sufficient experience and/or credentials. Career Paths Tui na practitioners may go on to found their own practices, work in small offices, or gain employment with larger hospitals or schools of TCM. Job Outlook According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts, employment within the Massage therapy field will increase from 18 to 26 percent through 2014. As patients increasingly turn to alternative forms of therapy and massage, it can be expected that the demand for tui na will also increase. Licensing and Accreditation Information Currently no official licensing or certification requirements exist for tui na practitioners, nor are there any accreditation requirements for programs that offer to teach tui na. However, most states do require that massage therapists pass the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB) in order to legally practice their trade. Make sure to contact your state to find out exact details and requirements.
