| The Perks of Spa Schools |
| by Robyn Tellefsen |
Whether you're passionate about personal training, hair design, or any other facet of beauty and wellness, spa schools offer plenty of perks on your personal road to success.
Free services, anyone?
At Spa Schools, one of the ways you learn how to give services is by receiving them. If you're learning the art of Massage therapy, get ready for lots of free massages; if you're discovering the science of skin care, get set for some free facials. And when you're looking for a new hair stylist or nail technician, you'll know exactly where to go for recommendations (and discounts!).
This will only take a minute...
The majority of spa programs can be completed in less than two years, so you can quickly go about the business of getting into business. You can start spa school at 17 if you're armed with a high school diploma, GED, or Ability-to-Benefit test score. Tip: If you're training to become a nail technician or esthetician, you'll only need about six months of spa school. Less time in school means less money spent on tuition and more time to command a salary.
Setting the trends
Spa schools teach you the history of various trends and the most in-demand techniques of today. You'll be on the cutting edge of beauty and wellness, and as you learn to trendwatch, you'll also learn how to forecast and even set the trends yourself.
Oodles of variety
Spa schools offer more than 20 different accredited programs of study, including cosmetology, massage therapy, nail technology, and esthetics. You can even go to school online. Just make sure the spa schools you're considering have been accredited by an agency that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
Gateway to Spa Careers
At spa schools, you'll gain practical experience on real clients. You just don't get that kind of career preparation at a liberal arts college. And once you do graduate, your services will be in demand. According to the International Spa Association, annual growth from July 2007 to June 2008 was 31 percent for total employees, and a whopping 53 percent for part-time employees. There's never been a better time to reap the benefits of spa education.
