| Structural Integration Studies - Structural Integration Programs |
| by Robyn Tellefsen |
Structural integration , also known as Rolfing, is a scientifically validated body therapy that was developed in the 1930s by Dr. Ida P. Rolf. Unlike traditional massage, structural integration is a form of bodywork that focuses on the protective layer of muscles known as fascia or connective tissue, rather than on the muscles themselves. This holistic system of soft tissue manipulation and movement education can dramatically improve posture and structure, relieve pain and chronic stress, and increase energy levels. Structural integration interconnects mind, body, and spirit.
What You'll Learn
In structural integration programs, you'll study anatomy, Kinesiology, and physiology from the distinct perspective of Rolfing. In your study of fascial anatomy, efficient body use, client/practitioner communication, and structural analysis, you'll acquire the skills to recognize simple structural patterns in the body's form and function and to see structure in relation to gravity. Instruction in professional ethics, business skills, and public education practices will prepare you to develop an independent Rolfing practice.
Degree Types
Certificate programs as well as continuing education units are available in structural integration. Basic certification programs may last 1-1/2 to 2 years, or a total of 650 in-class hours.
Career Paths
After completing training in a structural integration program, you may begin a successful career as a structural integration practitioner, or enhance an existing massage, bodywork, physical therapy, or other health care career. The freedom of self-employment is supported by a well-established reputation and a worldwide Rolfing community.
Job Outlook
According to the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration, there are currently 1,500 Certified Rolfers in 26 countries. In the U.S., Rolfers practice in nearly all 50 states, with concentrations on the East and West Coast and in Colorado. Client population ranges from infancy to old age, and is distributed equally between genders. It is estimated that more than one million people have received Rolfing work to date. Rolfers typically make between $75 and $125 per 60- to 75-minute session.
Licensing and Accreditation Information
As of May 2007, 38 states have passed laws regulating Massage therapy (which may include structural integration), many requiring practitioners to complete a formal education program and pass a national certification exam or a state licensing exam. The Rolf Institute of Structural Integration (http://www.rolf.org/) confers the Certified Rolfer and Rolf Movement Practitioner designations to those who successfully complete its programs.
