| Spa Career Secrets |
| by Gina LaGuardia |
When it comes to succeeding in the ultra-competitive spa industry, it sometimes takes more than top-notch training to succeed. Often, it's those inside Spa Career secrets that give you the cutting edge.
What things didn't you know about the massage industry until you were a working professional?
A good reputation takes lots of hard work... and soul searching.
"What I learned as an aesthetician and spa owner is that if you're passionate about your profession and how you want to be portrayed by your peers and clientele, your talent and reputation will speak for itself. You have to be diligent about your healing talent and always deliver what you preach. Spa customers today are very savvy; they want results coupled with pampering. It's a true art form that isn't learned in school. It has to come from your soul.
• Jillian Wright, Owner of Glow Skin Spa, New York, NY
Five-star flexibility will lead to five-star success.
"Spontaneity and flexibility with your time will put you at the top of all five-star hotels' wishlists. The clients I have want it now, which means being ready 24/7 has gotten me to the top, along with endurance and extreme deep tissue ability."
• Dr. Dot, celebrity masseuse
Get referrals, diversify, and conquer.
"Until I started working in the Spa Business I never new how big it had become." There are so many different services that are offered now besides traditional massages and facials like Ayurvedic services, various kinds of body treatments and medical services. I also didn't realize how important it is for clients to come to the spas and how many people benefit from getting treatments physically and emotionally.
• Nurse Eugenia Shakhnoff, Ona Spa, Los Angeles, CA
What spa career specialty areas do you foresee as emerging in popularity over the next two years? Why?
Jillian: Results-oriented skin care
"Most women and men do not have a lot of time, but they do not want 'fake facials.' They want to see and feel a difference in their skin pretty quickly. It's important to offer facials that give results, but also make the client feel relaxed. It's a happy medium to optimum health and skin."
Dr. Dot: Age prevention
"In addition to the normal facials, chemical peelings, botox and line fillers will be the norm. Why? The media crams 'younger is better' down our throats."
Eugenia: Doc-free fixes
"I see an increase in the area of medical services where a doctor isn't required: different laser services, injections of Botox, Restylane, and dermabrasions are very popular and profitable. Clients prefer getting those services done in a nice, relaxing enviroment like a spa, rather then going in a doctor's office where a lot of times they end up waiting and not getting enough attention."
