Reflexology Programs - Reflexology Study
by Dawn Papandrea
Reflexology originated with the early Egyptians, and is based on the idea that the zones of the feet, hands and ears correspond to all bodily systems and functions. The technique of Reflexology uses applied pressure on these areas in an effort to reduce stress and promote natural healing.

What You'll Learn
Reflexology schools offer practical, hands-on training to teach students techniques for reducing stress by using thumb, finger and hand methods. Reflexology schools also teach reflexology theory as it relates to the physiological improvements within the body.

Reflexology schools often teach general holistic coursework including Massage therapy, relaxation techniques, anatomy and physiology, foot mapping, chakra balancing, reflex mechanisms, stress management, and other related topics of study.

Degree Types
Certification is available in the United States through The American Reflexology Certification Board. Reflexology techniques are also commonly taught at most Massage Schools as part of a more general massage therapy degree program.

Career Paths
As a specialty within the larger field of massage therapy, those who practice reflexology can expect to work in wellness centers, holistic health clinics, or in private practice.

Job Outlook
In general, employment for massage therapists is expected to increase faster than average over the period from 2004 to 2014 as more people learn about the benefits of massage therapy, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Specialized skills in reflexology and other massage-related techniques can improve job prospects.

Licensing and Accreditation Information
The American Commission for Accreditation of Reflexology Education and Training (ACARET) exists to accredit the competency of practicing reflexology instructors, and schools by measure of their ability to meet professional standards. There are no national licensing requirements for reflexologist at this time, although, practitioners often operate under their state's massage therapy licensing requirements.
