| by Robyn Tellefsen |
Naprapathy is a system of health care that employs manual medicine, nutritional counseling, and therapeutic modalities to treat pain caused by connective tissue disorders. Some of the common connective tissue disorders successfully treated by naprapathic medicine include carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, and sciatica.
What You'll Learn
When you enroll in a naprapathy school, you will receive instruction in the medical sciences, including anatomy, Kinesiology, neurology, pathology, and physiology. Naprapathy programs also delve into the clinical sciences, including accessory techniques and adjunctive therapies, assistive devices, connective tissue manipulation, electrotherapy, evaluation procedures, nutritional counseling, postural counseling, practice management psychology, spinal anatomy and chartology, therapeutic and rehabilitative exercise, and treatment techniques.
Degree Types
Naprapathy schools offer four-year doctor of naprapathy (D.N.) degrees. To be credentialed, naprapaths must complete a minimum of six years of higher education, including one year of clinical experience. In addition, postgraduate instruction and continuing education programs are available for licensed naprapaths to expand their professional competencies.
Career Paths
Many licensed naprapaths start their own practice or a group practice. These holistic practices may offer several disciplines under one roof, such as Chiropractic, Massage therapy, naprapathy, and physical therapy. Some naprapaths employ MDs; still others are employed by MDs.
Job Outlook
With society increasingly embracing the benefits of holistic medicine, the market for the manual medicine and nutritional counseling of naprapathy has never been better.
Licensing and Accreditation Information
Naprapathy schools must be chartered by their state and recognized by their state board of higher education to grant a doctor of naprapathy degree. The naprapathic medicine examination offered by the National Board of Naprapathic Examiners is required for licensure. Currently, naprapaths are licensed in Illinois and New Mexico and regulated in Ohio. They may also practice in California, Florida, and other states where freedom of access statutes permit naprapathic doctors to practice.
