| by CB Staff |
medical massage refers to the branch of Massage therapy that is aimed specifically at treating patients' medical conditions. Medical massage therapists often work under the guidance of a trained medical professional, or in accordance with their recommendations. In general, the practice of medical massage is more concentrated upon improving patients' health rather than promoting relaxation and stress relief. What You'll Learn By enrolling in a medical massage program, you'll learn how to provide clients with safe and accurate treatments in response to various medical conditions and needs. Emphasis at Massage School is placed on correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Degree Types Most Massage Schools that have medical massage programs offer them at the associate degree level. Other massage schools may offer a bachelor's degree or certification program in medical massage. In order to properly help patients, while also excelling within the field, it is recommended that you further your education as much as possible. Career Paths Medical massage therapists are more likely to be found working in doctor's offices, hospitals, or rehabilitation centers under the guidance or instruction of trained medical professionals. Job Outlook According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment within the massage therapy field is expected to increase from 18 to 26 percent through 2014. As more members of the medical community begin to integrate medical massage into their practices and/or treatment routines, the rate of employment for medical massage therapists should also increase. Licensing and Accreditation Information The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) grants national certification to qualified applicants who satisfactorily complete the organization's national therapeutic massage and bodywork certification exam. Some states require aspiring massage therapists to gain certification from NCBTMB before they can become licensed. Additional requirements for licensing and accreditation may vary from state to state.
