Iridology is the study of the human iris and its relation to total well-being. According to proponents of iridology, the iris accurately and actively reflects changes within the body and its organs. From studying the color and patterns of an iris, as well as where they appear within certain areas, iridologists can gain intimate knowledge of a patient's past illnesses, present afflictions, and possible future health concerns.
What You'll Learn
With an education in iridology, you will be able to learn about a person's health simply by reading the appearance of their irises. By closely examining a patient's eyes and comparing the patterns and colors that appear with eye charts, a skilled iridologist will be able to tell patients about their past health as well as things to watch out for in future. Since iridology is not meant to be used as the sole form of diagnosis (it should be used in conjunction with other assessments, preferably), practitioners may wish to expand their knowledge into other fields of Alternative Medicine.
Degree Types
Iridology schools and programs will grant students a certificate upon satisfactory completion of the curriculum.
Career Paths
After completing their iridology education, graduates may choose to embark on careers as iridologists or study other holistic health fields in order to expand their learning and credentials. It is not unusual for trained iridologists to study -- and then enter a career in -- naturopathy.
Job Outlook
As iridology is not formally recognized by the medical community, iridologists may wish to complement their education by studying within other holistic and alternative medicine fields. Some may wish to focus their career in another field, and offer iridology consultations as an additional service within their practice.
Licensing and Accreditation Information
There are currently no licensing or accrediting bodies associated with iridology in the United States. In order to gain recognition in the field, it is recommended that you receive certification from a respected school.
