by CB Staff
A specialty within the overall field of nursing,

holistic nursing

is a medical approach that uses the concept of a mind-body connection as its basis. As such, holistic nursing integrates a number of holistic and alternative methods -- such as biofeedback, meditation, Acupuncture, therapeutic massage, and prayer -- into its treatment of patients. The American Nurses Association has given official recognition to holistic nursing's status within the industry.

What You'll Learn
When you enroll in a holistic nursing program, you will learn about the importance of the mind-body connection in regards to a patient's health and wellness, and how different forms of alternative and complimentary medicine may be used to comfort and treat patients.

Degree Types
There are currently no official holistic nursing degrees offered, though certificate programs are available. These courses may be available at traditional nursing schools, or offered by standalone institutions.

Career Paths
Holistic nurses may be employed in hospital's, physician's offices, nursing care centers, home care offices, and anywhere else one might expect to find an RN practicing.

Job Outlook
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for registered nurses is expected to increase by 23 percent through 2016. As more people turn to holistic medicine and alternative therapies, the demand for holistic nurses may also be expected to increase, though exact numbers are unknown.

Licensing and Accreditation Information
Individuals may become certified in holistic nursing through the American Holistic Nurses' Certification Corporation (AHNCC) after a review of their portfolio and their satisfactory completion of a standardized test. While becoming a RN requires a student to receive either a bachelor's or an associate degree in nursing -- as well pass the NCLEX-RN (national licensing examination) -- becoming additionally certified as a holistic nurse requires a bachelor's degree, though it does not need to be in nursing.
