Divinity Programs

  are designed to teach mastery of the innumerable tasks with which ministers contend on any given day. The courses offer an in-depth view of theology as it is perceived in many different religions, while also assisting ministers in guiding colleagues and congregants through an understanding of relationship dynamics.

Degree Types
Master of Divinity (M.Div) is generally the first professional degree accepted among most religious ordaining bodies, followed by the more advanced degree, the Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.). Typical coursework involves theological studies of major world religions, Bible and holy book studies, ethics, and ministry.

Career Paths
Students of divinity programs who have intentions to become ordained ministers or clergy members should learn about the specific educational requirements. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook 2008-2009, members of the clergy "conduct religious worship and perform other spiritual functions associated with beliefs and practices of religious faith or denomination, as well as provide spiritual and moral guidance and assistance to members."

Job Outlook
Job outlook for these positions are expected to increase faster than the average profession over the period of 2006-16, according to the BLS.

Licensing and Accreditation Information
As with other professions, be sure that you attened a properly accredited institution to ensure your degree in divinity is valid.
