Created with the needs of office workers in mind, the chair massage promotes circulation, relaxes muscles, and -- most importantly -- reduces neck strain and stress. As a fully clothed patient sits in a specially designed chair, the massage therapist applies various massage techniques to the back, neck, and shoulder regions. Unlike some other forms of Massage therapy, the chair massage can be effective in as little as 10 minutes -- although sessions may be extended to 30 minutes.

People who wish to be practice chair massage may choose to enroll in standard massage therapy programs or chair massage programs. By enrolling in a chair massage course, you'll learn how to correctly perform a variety of back, neck, and shoulder massages to a patient seated in a massage chair.
Degree Types
Although aspiring chair massage practitioners may earn certificates, diplomas, and/or degrees in massage therapy, there are no degrees or other credentials awarded for chair massaging in particular.
Career Paths
Learning to perform chair massages opens up a number of career opportunities for students. Thanks to the ease with which equipment may be transported chair massage practitioners will find themselves working at wide array of venues. While some may choose to work with established massage companies and businesses, other chair massage therapists may choose to start their own business or work on a client-by-client basis.
Job Outlook
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment within the massage therapy field as a whole will increase from 18 to 26 percent through the year 2014. In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for chair massage services at offices, malls, and assorted events.
Licensing and Accreditation Information
In order to give chair massages, a practitioner should either be trained in chair massages or be an experienced massage therapist. Note that in the United States, the requirements for massage therapy licensure may differ depending upon the state in which you wish to practice. Some states may even require that aspiring massage therapists pass the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB) in order gain certification and practice legally.
Massage therapy and chair massage programs and schools, may be accredited by a state accrediting agency and/or outside organization.
