| Beat Recession Blues at Fitness Schools |
| by Robyn Tellefsen |
Even in a recession, fitness schools are a wise investment in your future. According to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, gym memberships peaked nationally in 2006 at more than 42 million and are still going strong. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of fitness workers is expected to increase 27 percent - much faster than the average for all occupations - between 2006 and 2016. And now, in 2009, laid-off workers are using their time off to get back in shape. There's never been a better time to look into fitness schools.
Fitness programs
Fitness schools integrate academic classroom study and workshops with practical, hands-on training at the gym. Fitness programs may run anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of months, or even up to a couple of years. Most fitness programs lead to a diploma or certificate and prepare students for professional certification.
Fitness courses
Foundational fitness courses include anatomy and Kinesiology, biomechanics, bodybuilding, exercise physiology, exercise prescription, Nutrition, personal training, training adaptations, weight management, weight training, assessment and program design, and business skills. With access to state-of-the-art fitness centers, students at fitness schools learn on the same exercise equipment they will use with future clients.
Fitness goals
Fitness schools prepare students with the knowledge base and skills essential to prescribe exercise and fitness programs for active as well as sedentary individuals. Upon graduation, students have the qualifications to train anyone for fitness, including seniors and those with medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and obesity.
Fitness careers
Fitness schools offer internships and career placement assistance so that students can launch their fitness careers successfully - often before graduation. With formal fitness education, students can become personal trainers, group exercise instructors, or yoga or Pilates teachers in various aspects of the health and fitness industry, such as clients' homes, corporate wellness centers, health clubs, hospitals, the outdoors, personal training studios, and physical therapy and rehab practices.
Want to beat the recession blues and get in shape while you get an education? Fitness schools have just what you're looking for.
