Aromatherapy

is a holistic healing process that is used to promote psychological and physical well being through the use of essential oils. Through this release, aromatherapy is able to affect a person's mood positively to calm them down. As a result, aromatherapy can create a sense of healing, as well as a positive attitude.

What You'll Learn
Aromatherapy classes focus on the history of aromatherapy, knowledge of various oils, anatomy, chemistry, and practice management. Within aromatherapy programs, many schools offer both distance learning and hands-on courses that give students firsthand experience practicing.

Degree Types
In order to practice aromatherapy on an individual, students must first be certified. Aromatherapy certificates are the most common form of educational program that students pursue. There are also various master diploma programs available to those interested in furthering their aromatherapy education. The amount of hours required for each program depends on the individual school.

Career Paths
Students of aromatherapy may choose to practice by becoming aromatherapists, while others may work by retailing essential oils or writing about the practice of aromatherapy. Some of those who earn aromatherapy certificates are already licensed massage therapists, chiropractors, or aestheticians.

Job Outlook
Because those who earn aromatherapy certificates most likely have had prior training in other fields, their chances of getting a job are higher due to their increased knowledge. Salaries for those with an aromatherapy background vary greatly depending on the ultimate place of work.

Licensing and Accreditation Information
There is no set licensing required by any state at this time, according to the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA). The use of the topical application of essential oils requires a professional license, such as in Massage therapy. Aromatherapists should be sure to check in with their state boards about what is required of them to practice.
